Electric Wharf, Coventry Canal
Design and construction of a new footbridge connecting the Electric Wharf development to the council depot on the opposite side of the Coventry Canal.
Make up of the footbridge was a hollow triangular plated arch supported on piled foundations, with a deck suspended by McAlloy bars and gallows brackets. With a span of only 14m, the structure was complex due to the arch being twisted over its length.
Considerable liaison with British Waterways was required at all times to ensure that canal users were not inconvenienced. This not only made the bridge difficult to construct, but lifting it into place was complex due to the suspension.
Careful detailing and monitoring of the fabrication ensured that the structure was made to the exacting dimensions. This, coupled with an intensive check of the lifting procedure, made sure that the bridge was positioned with minimal disruption to canal traffic.
