Fort Monckton Coast Protection
The provision of coastal protection to Fort Monckton, which was originally constructed in 1783.
This project provided four-to-eight tonne rock armour protection to an inter-tidal revetment and minor concrete and drainage works.
Key Benefits
- All rock was delivered by sea from France. The initial rock delivery plan was to use the highways network but Dean & Dyball suggested delivery by sea. This was accepted by the client as being a cheaper and more efficient option and caused less disruption to Gosport.
- An efficient delivery process was developed by Dean & Dyball. To allow rock delivery to be as close to the shore as possible a rock pier was constructed, from which plant could work to offload the rock.
- Working seven days a week. Due to the tidal working conditions worked continued throughout the week.
Originally constructed in 1783, Fort Monckton’s main period of use was during the Napoleonic War, when it was heavily armed. In the Second World War it was used as a store and barracks.
It is now a military training site under the aegis of the British Army, known as No.1 Training Establishment. There is no public access to the site, hence close negotiations has to be made with the MOD at all time regarding site delivery and working times.
