In May 2000 the Environment Agency awarded Britain’s first Public Private Partnership (PPP) flood defence contract to Pevensey Coastal Defence Limited.

Shingle is imported from off-shore marine sources

The Pevensey sea defences comprise a shingle bank 9km long with 150 groynes that protect an area of 50km2 between Eastbourne and Bexhill.

Within this area there are more than 3,000 properties, several caravan parks, important recreational and commercial sites, a main road, a railway and part of the Pevensey Levels, an internationally important nature reserve.

The scheme is increasing the standard of protection against flooding and maintains the improved level of protection.

Shingle imported from off-shore marine sources is utilised. During the course of the project the majority of the existing groynes will be removed to form a more open and easily maintained beach.
