Bawdsey Coastal Defences
Construction of flood defences and coastal protection works at East Lane, Bawdsey, on the Suffolk coast.
The purpose of this scheme was to augment the transition between the flood defences and the coast protection work, to re-profile the rock revetment in front of the Martell Tower ‘W’ and to construct a new rock end structure, known as a fishtail groyne, immediately south of the Martello Tower.
The new rock End Structure provides protection to the existing cliffs by arresting erosion and encouraging the accretion of beach material.
The existing Suffolk Coastal District Council (SCDC) Frontage rock revetment in front of the Martello Tower has been improved over a number of years through a series of emergency works. The scheme entailed the excavation and construction of a mass rock toe and re-profiling of the existing revetment to provide a permanent structure to protect the cliffs from further erosion.
The existing Environment Agency rock armour revetment was re-profiled and augmented to provide a continuity of defence and improve the transition to the defences in front of the existing steel sheet piles. Additionally the earth flood bank at the top of the cliff was reconstructed.
