Cornwall Spine Main
This contract comprised 16km of new 600mm ductile iron potable water main to reinforce the 1000mm diameter spine main.
Key Benefits
- To take full financial advantage of the client’s material supplier agreement, eight strategically positioned compounds were set up prior to contract commencement to take delivery
- The most economical alignment was designed taking into consideration all the local environmental and topographical issues within the available corridor, including SSSIs, mine workings, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), sites of archaeological interest and protected flora and fauna
- Saving on time and improving safety was achieved by replacing manual handling of pipes to using a vacuum lifter and bespoke trailers when loading out from compounds
- Winning back time lost due to dormice, a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, inhabiting major sections of the route, pipe-laying proceeded on up to four fronts to ensure completion during the summer, good weather, period
- Excellent public relations were established on this project with Dean & Dyball taking a lead role interfacing with over 100 landowners and tenant farmers. Local labour was employed for additional gangs to complete the works to programme, enhancing the local economy and reducing environmental impacts.
The work included three major road crossings and one rail crossing, as well as numerous cross connections.
Due to the environmental constraints the only available route for the pipeline was shared with parallel services including the existing fragile 1000mm water main, high pressure gas mains up to 900mm, fibre optic cables and HV electrical cables.
The scheme was completed to programme and below target cost.
