Provision of an award-winning 54m span stainless steel footbridge across Bristol’s floating harbour.

Completed bridge spectacularly lit at night

This bridge provides a much needed link between Castlemore Securities new residential and office developments on Avon Street, north of the floating harbour, and the Temple Quay business quarter.

This was a design and build contract, with the Dean & Dyball team co-ordinating the activities of the architect, structural engineer and lighting consultants with the specialist supplier.

The structure is a portal frame with a stainless steel stressed skin. Laser cut perforations in the surface reveal the inner ribbed structure at night, providing a stunning visual display.

The surfaces of the structure were carefully modelled to allow them to be developed into flat sheets, so that they could be easily fabricated.

The legs of the portal structure sit within 4m deep buried reinforced concrete abutments, supported on piles. A sheet pile wall retains the south bank and abutment.

The 70 tonne bridge was transported to site in eight sections, assembled and lifted into position in a single lift. A 1,000 tonne crane operated up to a 45m radius to achieve this.
