Tolvaddon Bridge A30 Devon/Cornwall
Replacement of the bridge deck on the A30 at Tolvaddon, on the Devon/Cornwall border.
Over a 48 week period the two decks of Tolvaddon Bridge were demolished and rebuilt. A temporary structure was used to maintain traffic flow throughout the construction period and minimised disruption to the travelling public.
Prior to the programmed weekend demolition, the bridge deck was cut into segments ready to be removed in a tandem lift using two 300 tonne cranes.
The bridge sections, weighing between 85 and 110 tonnes each, were lifted to the road below, cut in half, and removed by low-loader.
Associated clean-up operations ran smoothly and all routes were opened ahead of schedule.
